“Kokeshi” are traditional dolls that are believed to have originated in the Edo period. They were used as charms to wish for children’s well-being. They have predominantly been made in the Tohoku (Northeastern) region of Japan, and their place of manufacture determines regional variations in all, 11 varieties have been found. Highcraft is located along the shore in Kanagwa Prefecture. We are the only producer, who can make speakers of Hakone Parquetry all over the world. We’ve engaged in natural sound creation in the town with a history of more than 400 years surrounded by the bountiful sea. The root of our sound creation is “music comes from rich spirit”. Our sound comes from the comfort of sea breeze and the sunshine filtering through foliage. Warm hearts and breadth of minds make us produce unique products, which enrich your heart too.

My idea to become a bamboo crafter and create kokeshi was influenced by a single item: an ornamental earpick. The top end of that earpick was decorated with a charming kokeshi doll, and I immediately though to myself “I want to make this kind of doll out of a single piece of bamboo.” Since then, my workshop has expanded to offer a near-infinite range of kokeshi goods including earpicks, decorative straps, chopstick holders, chopsticks, hairpins, and more. I invite you to enjoy the world of kokeshi dolls. My works have been broadcasted at TVs (KHB and MMT), radios (TBS), and newspapers (Kohoku Weekly Sendai and Oasis).

Hakone Parquetry

Hakone Parquetry is crafted with mosaic board, which is precisely parqueted with a variety of wood and has certain thickness. Hakone Parquetry roughly has two techniques. One is called “Zuku Paste”, which is to paste sliced mosaic board (sheets) around wooden products. The other one is “Muku Work” which is to shape mosaic board itself as a product. Hakone Parquetry is generally famous for letter boxes, chests, jewelry boxes, trays, plates and trick boxes. Recently, however, its variety is diversified with the improvement of international visibility.
Tsugaru Lacquer

Tsugaru Lacquer is born in Tsugaru District, Aomori Prefecture in 17th century and was designated a Japanese national craft in 1975. Its technique is to roll up cypress with cloth, to paint lacquer 40 times, to sharpen with a whetstone, and to polish. It takes more than 60 days.
Makie

To create different colours and textures, makie artists use a variety of metal powders including gold, silver, copper, brass, lead, aluminum, platinum, pewter, as well as their alloys. Bamboo tubes and soft brushes of various sizes are used for laying powders and drawing fine lines. As it requires highly-skilled craftsmanship to produce a makie painting, young artists usually go through many years of training to develop the skills and to ultimately become makie masters. Kouami Douchou (1410–1478) was the first lacquer master linked to specific works. His makie works used designs from various Japanese contemporary painters. Kouami and another makie master, Igarashi Shinsai, were originators of the two major schools of lacquer-making in the history of Japan.
